For our first Food related blog post we want to highlight our local black-owned restaurants. We believe that they are the underdogs of our food chain restaurants, they need to get as much love and recognition like everyone else. It gives them an equal playing field in the industry and allows for better opportunities; plus their food is amazing! So if you are in a look out for a new restaurant to try out this weekend, give these places a try. Support your local restaurants and support black-owned businesses.
This place is a fusion between African and East Indian cuisine, they use fresh local ingredients, and have a lot of positive reviews in Google. Their food is often reviewed as tasting very authentic, and have very friendly customer service. They also offer delivery through SkipTheDishes.com
Recommended Dishes: Beef Ribs and Garlic Naan

This is a one-stop-shop for authentic Caribbean for food! Their food is available for takeout or delivery seven days a week. They are also a grocery store for traditional West Indian culinary items, and their shelves are stocked with products locals cannot find in their ordinary grocery stores. So if you're planning on cooking up some Jamaican dishes, this is the place to grab your ingredients. It has been called "One of Calgary's best little secrets".

This is a family-owned restaurant that is very passionate about their food, which clearly shows not only in the dish, but to the environment of their restaurant as well. Their mission is to introduce the exotic flavours to Canadians and prove that it is here to stay because of how good it is. They have amazing customer service and because of this, they have a lot of regular customers coming back. You can trust their great food portions that are always spiced to perfection.

This place takes pride on the modern presentation of their food and their promise to only use high quality fresh ingredients in their dishes. Their food is also at an unbeatable price point that won't break the bank while offering the true taste of an Afro-Caribbean dish. Staff are very helpful in introducing and explaining every dish to newcomers to make them feel more comfortable. Yenny Delights also offer delivery through Door Dash.

This place is owned by a wonderful woman who used to be a teacher in Nigeria; friends and family always praised her for her delicious dishes. Even today, her passion and love for food shows with how great everything in her menu tastes. They offer authentic Nigerian dishes that so much locals crave and praise. The staff is always very friendly and attentive, making sure all their guests feel right at home.
Recommended Dishes: Shrimp Fried Rice and Puff Puff

Chef Jenny opened Jane Bond BBQ back in 2011 and it has grown since! She is of Jamaican descent and incorporates her culture into the food she creates. Aside from the amazing BBQ, they also offer other Southern comfort food, such as po' boys, crawfish, and andouille sausage. The restaurant also has a 'Grab N' Go' market that features frozen meals, sauces, Grill Your Own Adventure Pack, a variety of beers and drinks, and merch! Head on down to Jane Bond BBQ and experience Southern hospitality like no other. You can also find them on Skip the Dishes, Door Dash, and Uber Eats.
Recommended Dishes: Bond Platter (features most of their meat) and Crawfish

If you're looking for a Caribbean hotspot, you have to come to Simply Irie! Simply Irie is a family-owned and run restaurant and has been open since 2014. According to their website, owners Patterson and Fay Bruney have over 40 years of combined experience in the service and manage industry, so you know the food is bound to be good! They offer a variety of authentic Caribbean food, such as Jerk Chicken, Stew Oxtail, and Curry Goat. If you've never had Caribbean food before, worry not as the staff and even the owner will help guide you through their menu so you don't feel overwhelmed. Best of all, their prices are absolutely affordable!

Last but not the least... Comfort! We are absolutely obsessed with this food shop. It's technically not a physical restaurant and only works out of Monte Carlo Bar's kitchen. The owner has been in the food business for over 10 years before she decided to open Comfort last year. She mainly runs her business through her Instagram account, and if you want to order your goods, you can either call, dm, or look her up (Monte Carlo) on Door Dash. She offers Birria Tacos, Birriamen, Birria Quesadilla, and much more. However, she offers different specials (which are absolutely bomb!) everyday like her Seafood Boil and Jerk Chicken.
