DIY Hanging Shelf Under $10

If you’ve been scrolling through Pinterest for ways to beautify your empty wall, this is the perfect project for you. This DIY project takes less than 30 minutes to make and adds some storage space in your room. Did we mention this costs less than $10? If you’re a hoarder like me, you’ll be lucky to find materials you already have at home and make this shelf for free!

Here are the only things you’ll need:

In these few easy steps, you can make a shelf suitable for room decorations, small plants and succulents, or picture frames:

1. Measure and mark 1 inch away from each corner of the wood plank and drill as marked.

2. (Optional) If desired, sand the surface of the plank and stain or paint with your desired colour. You may opt to skip these steps, depending on the look you’re going for.

3. Cut two 20-inch pieces of rope. This can be adjusted based on your desired shelf height.

4. Thread the rope through the drilled holes on side at a time and tie a knot on both ends of the rope to secure the plank in place. Do the same for the opposing side. Make sure both sides are even.

5. Your shelf is complete! Attach the shelf to your wall using sturdy hooks and decorate as you wish.

A few tips:

• The best part of this project is that it is completely customizable. The length, size and colour of the shelf can easily be altered to fit your aesthetic needs.

• If you opt to make multiple-leveled shelves, make sure they are even, tying knots at this step can be tricky. Trial and error is your best friend!

• If you are buying wood planks, your local hardware store should be able to cut them for you (and some might drill your holes for free). Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance.
