The Most Amazing Apple Crisp Crumble Recipe (That Will Have You and Your Guests Grabbing Seconds)

Updated: Jan 26, 2021

Would anyone else agree that the holidays also mean desserts? (gasp) I feel like everyone loves the holidays because they get to enjoy time with friends and family, you get to have a family reunion, you get to give gifts and receive gifts, and best of all, you get to enjoy the best food and desserts because holiday weight doesn't count. Trust us, you’re good, don't worry.

So, please don’t be surprised that we're releasing so many holiday dessert recipes left and right because it is our favorite time of the year.

One of the best things about the holiday season is those warm, apple, caramelly, ooey-gooey desserts. There are also more iconic holiday flavors we will be talking about later on but today we are highlighting this amazing apple crisp crumble that is to die for. I have served this in multiple holiday events and it is always a crowd-pleaser. Also to be honest with you, I have also made this in the middle of summer (because that is how often I crave this dessert) and people always go back for seconds (and thirds).

So here we go, without further ado, Apple Crisp Crumble A La Mode with salted caramel drizzle.

Topping

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup old fashioned rolled oats

  • 1 cup brown sugar

  • 1 tsp baking powder

  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon

  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg

  • ¼ tsp salt

  • ½ cup unsalted butter diced into small cubes

Filling

  • 6 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and cut into thin slices

  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter, melted

  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 3 tbsp water

  • 1 tbsp of lemon juice

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • ⅓ cup brown sugar

  • ½ ground cinnamon

  • ½ ground nutmeg

  • 1 pinch of salt

Salted Caramel Drizzle

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 6 tbsp room temperature butter cut into cubes

  • ½ cup heavy cream

  • 2 tsp of salt

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and position oven rack one level below center. Butter an 8x8 inch baking dish and set aside.

  2. In a mixing bowl, mix together flour, oats, brown sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Add cubed butter sliced and with your hands or a fork, mix together butter and dry topping mixtures. You want the mixture to resemble wet sand, or until the mixture comes together in small crumbles. Transfer to the refrigerator and let it chill while working on the filling.

  3. In a small mixing bowl, whisk together melted butter and butter until it is well blended. Mix together water, lemon juice, and vanilla. Then stir in brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.

  4. Toss the apples in this wet mixture to make sure each apple is evenly coated. Place the apples in your prepared baking dish, and spread it out in an even layer.

  5. Top the apples with your dry crumble topping, make sure your apples are completely covered in this crumble.

  6. Bake in the oven for 40 minutes. The top will be golden brown and the apples will be tender. The apples will make a gooey caramel-like juice that will be oozing out of the topping (that is the best part).

  7. Once it’s done baking, take out the dish and let it sit and cool down for 15 minutes (this will be the hardest and longest 15 minutes of your life)

  8. Serve with your favorite vanilla ice cream and top with your salted caramel drizzle!

Instructions for salted caramel drizzle:

  1. Heat granulated sugar in a medium saucepan. Stirring constantly with a wooden spoon. Take note that the sugar will form clumps at first then eventually melt into a thick brown, amber-colored liquid-like consistency. Remember to keep an eye on it because it might burn.

  2. Once the sugar is completely melted, go ahead and add the butter and please remember to be careful with this step because you might burn yourself with the sugar bubbling.

  3. Stir the butter into the caramel mixture for about 2 minutes until it’s completely melted. If you notice that the mixture separates a bit, just take the pot off the heat and continue to stir vigorously until it’s combined.

  4. Slowly drizzle in the heavy cream while stirring. Allow the mixture to boil for a minute.

  5. Remove from the heat and then stir in the salt and allow the mixture to cool down before serving. Take note that caramel will thicken as it cools down.

There you go! We hope you enjoy this recipe. Like I said, this one is tried and true; it never fails because every time you make it (and it’s completely fail-proof), everyone will be sure to grab seconds. Please send us pictures for when you do make it and let us know what you think!

We’ll talk to you in our next post,
