We Tried It - Pie Junkie YYC

Updated: Dec 6, 2020

Hey guys and welcome back! We hope everyone had a good weekend. We are now in the first week of August. Isn’t that crazy?! Anyways, in light of the recent Heritage Day, we decided to dedicate this week to feature local shops in Calgary. We went out and explored what these places have to offer and we are giving you our honest review on what to get and what you should maybe save your money on. These are our thoughts and opinions and they may be different from yours, so please be kind and understanding in the comments down below.

Today we’re excited to share with you some of our thoughts on Pie Junkie’s best pies. Pie Junkie offers a variety of pies ranging from sweet to savoury. Aside from that, they also serve other baked pastries such as cookies, tarts, and brownies, you’ll never run out of options. In store, they offer two pie sizes: mini and full-size. They cater to parties and weddings; their pies are also available for wholesale purchases for your business.

They have three locations in Calgary (Mahogany, Kensington, and Spruce Cliff) and are open Monday-Sunday. You can also find them on DoorDash and Skip the Dishes.

Pie Junkie is definitely one of our favourite pastry shops and we couldn’t recommend it enough! To start off, we’re just gonna say that we’ve tried EVERY. SWEET. PIE. THEY. HAD. Yep, you read that right! And we definitely have our favourites and least recommended ones for you. Check our their sweet menu HERE.

We love Banana Toffee, Key Lime, Chocolate Brownie, and Coconut Cream. Coconut cream is definitely the top 1 on our list. It’s creamy like velvet, not too sweet, and the coconut flavour is subtle and not too overpowering.

Next up is Key Lime. We haven’t had a lot of Key Limes in our life but this absolutely changed us! It’s got a hint of sourness from the lime but it’s subtle enough that you can savour the sweetness of the pie. The consistency is that of cheesecake and oh man, is it smooth as heck! This is really good to enjoy in the summer heat with a side of iced, cold tea!

When someone says Banana Toffee, we say perfect level of sweetness! It’s mind-blowing that this toffee dessert isn’t disgustingly sweet, at all! The toffee is mildly sweet and compliments the banana flavour quite well. It isn’t tough or chewy like any regular toffee you’ve had. Don’t get us started on the creaminess of the filling! It’s made with whipped cream so it strikes a perfect balance between the texture of the banana, toffee, and the crust.

And last on our favourites list: Chocolate Brownie Pie! You might wonder, “Brownie Pie? What the hell is that?”. Well, if you’ve ever had a brownie skillet before, it’s the same concept but with a pie crust. Whoever thought of this is a genius! You get the crunchiness of the crust, the softness of the brownie, then you get a layer of melted chocolate on the inside that just melts in your mouth! Oh, and did we mention it has walnuts? The walnuts add some dimension and depth to the flavour palette of the whole dessert. We do recommend adding a scoop of vanilla ice cream to blend all those flavours together.

Now, for our least favourites. First up is Sour Cherry. I mean sour is in the name, sooo… We’re not big fans of sour food, so this pie is not for us. It’s got really good flavour but we can’t take the sourness of the cherries. However, if you’re into sour profiles, you will definitely enjoy this. On a scale of 1-10, this pie would be a 3-4 on sourness. Second one is Classic Apple. We had this on our first trip to Pie Junkie, and expected more from it. Right off the bat, the apple filling was really dry and left a really tarty aftertaste. The sweetness was perfect but the flavour didn’t really do well. And lastly, Caramel Brittle. This sounds really tasty. At first sight, you’d think it’s crème brulee, so we decided to try it. However, this one failed to impress as there was a really eggy taste to it, which is overpowering.

We have yet to try their savoury pies and other baked pastries, but we can definitely save that review for another day (comment if u want us to 😉). As far as we can tell, Pie Junkie offers premium quality pies that are perfect for every occasion and are really budget-friendly! You can enjoy a mini-pie on your own or grab a full-size one to share. Once you try it, you’ll keep coming back for more (ie. Us; we keep coming back for more lol)

We hope you enjoyed our review of the Pie Junkie’s desserts! Let us know if you enjoy these types of posts. Also let us know which local food chain you would like us to review soon. Stay tuned for our review on La Diperie’s ice creams and donuts on Thursday. Comment down below on what you think of Pie Junkie’s pies and what is your favourite item to get from them.

We look forward to talking to you guys soon!
