Summer Skincare Tips

Updated: Dec 30, 2020

Hey guys! We're in the last week of July and halfway through summer! It's been getting pretty hot in Calgary lately. With the mix of humidity and sun exposure, there is no doubt that our skin can be problematic during this time. So, we've compiled a list of skincare tips (that we've tried and tested) to keep your skin healthy and glowing under the sun!

1. MOISTURIZE, MOISTURIZE, MOISTURIZE (SKIN & LIPS)

Summer time doesn’t mean we have to ditch our moisturizers. Moisturizing in the summertime is still beneficial as the heat can still dry out the skin. Switch out your heavy winter moisturizers for something lighter. We recommend using tinted moisturizers as it hydrates your skin AND gives you light coverage. And don’t forget about the lips! Lips can get sunburned too, and may also lead to skin cancer if overexposed. There are a ton of lip balms that contain spf , which you can find in drugstores and in boutique beauty stores.

2. SLATHER ON SOME SUNSCREEN

We all know when summer is near when stores fill up a whole aisle or two exclusively with sunscreen! This product is definitely a no-brainer. Sunscreen protects our skin from getting sunburned and getting exposed to dangerous UV rays which causes wrinkles, fine lines, and skin cancer in the long run. Make sure to slather on some sunscreen from head-to-toe as UV rays can still penetrate through clothing. There are different types of sunscreens with varying ingredients, so be sure to do your research to know which one is best for you.

3. STAY HYDRATED

Some people often forget that our water intake actually affects all our body organs, especially our skin. On fun summer days, it' easy forget to hydrate while enjoying the beautiful weather. This often leads to dehydration, which presents itself through different symptoms ranging from mild to severe. Dry and dull skin is always an indication that you’re dehydrated and need some water in your system. DEHYDRATION ALSO LEADS TO HEAT EXHAUSTION AND HEAT STROKE IN SEVERE CASES! So, make sure to have a water bottle at hand to quench that thirst.

4. SPRITZ WATER ON YOUR FACE

It's important to give your skin a little boost of hydration throughout the day, especially on extremely hot days. The best way to give your skin that little hydration boost is by using a thermal spray. We recommend using Avene Thermal Spring Water as it uses natural spring water from southern France. This is perfect for people whose skin flares up under the summer heat; it reduces redness and sensitivity; it’s very gentle on the skin and is good for all ages!

5. COMBAT DARK SPOTS WITH ANTI-PIGMENTATION PRODUCTS

A lot of people experience hyper-pigmentation or dark spots during the summer. That is because our skin is exposed to harmful UV rays. One way to tackle those dark spots is by using anti-pigmentation serums or creams. Most anti-pigmentation products are photo-sensitive so it’s best to apply it at night and make sure to protect your skin from direct sun exposure during the day.

6. WEAR A HAT

One thing people don't think about when going out under the sun is protecting the scalp from sun exposure. While getting a bit of sun exposure on your head actually helps alleviate scalp issues (like dandruff), over-exposing your scalp to the sun is actually as bad as over-exposing the rest of your body. Wearing a hat or a cap is vital to help keep your scalp and face from getting sunburned and to avoid those nasty UV rays.

7. EXFOLIATING IS KEY

As you probably know by now, the summer heat can really dry and dull out skin, so it’s important to exfoliate all those dead skin cells to give a new way to brighter skin! Exfoliating is best done at night to let your skin breathe overnight and not expose your freshly-exfoliated skin under direct sunlight.

We hope that these tips can help you out! But just a reminder that these are general tips that have worked for us. Everyone has different skin types and these might work differently on different people. So, use with caution and always consult your dermatologist. We'll see you on Thursday for another post!
